First United Methodist Church

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

Next Sunday, July 11 is Graduate Sunday. We will celebrate by recognizing our graduates of high school and college during worship, and have a reception for them during Fellowship Time immediately following worship.

If you have a graduate in your family and have not let the church office know, please do so as soon as possible. A special insert with names, etc. is planned for Sunday. Thank you.

VBS dates are July 25-29 (Sunday-Thursday), 6:00-8:30 PM with the closing program on Sunday, August 1, at 6:00 PM, all at the Free Methodist Church on 4th Street.

Monday, July 26, is the evening that FUMC is responsible for supplying extra help and snacks. Volunteers are needed for as many evenings as they are available, however.

The menu is the same one we had last year:

  • Grilled cheese sandwiches
  • Watermelon and cantaloupe
  • Rice Krispie treats
  • Drink

At this time we have the following volunteers:

Food for July 26: Velma Hendrix, Sue Mardis, Marilyn Chattin, Kathy Case

Storyteller for July 26: Lillian Klipsch

Registration: Linda Dobbyn

Guides: Khelia Brink for 1st and 2nd graders; Betty Mardis

Crafts: Jennifer Hensley, craft director for the entire VBS; Susan Meier and Pep Salmond

Games: Judy McLear, Diane Stepro, Abby Miller

Youth (to be placed as needed): Belana Stepro, Allison Miller, Nathan Springfield, and

Haylee Green

I think there were a couple of others who have told me they would help, but have not signed up on the bulletin board. Anyone else who is available; please let me know if you are planning to assist and your available dates and areas of interest.

Also, help with the preschoolers is still needed. Volunteers are still needed to work with the 3-4 year olds in a self-contained class setting. Music and crafts will be planned for this age by the music and craft volunteers and you will have assistance with games, but you (and a host of others) will be responsible for storytelling and keeping the little ones contained.

Please let me know how you wish to help or sign up on the bulletin board at church. Thanks, Cindy 886-6932

NOTES OF THANKS

To my Christian Family,

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the weekend at RockvilleWomen’s Prison a special, life-changing experience for 42 women. Special thanks to all who baked cookies and made placemats. Special thanks to all of you who prayed for God to shower extra blessings on these women and let them know just how much He loves each of them and as His church, just how much we care. It was very hard for them to comprehend that people were willing to do all of this for them. They were so very grateful. One woman at my table said that she had never heart the words, “I love you” before in her life. Another woman said that although she had to live the rest of her life in prison for the bad choices she had made, she now could live for Christ.

God asked you to visit Him in prison and that is just what you did. Thank you.

Together in His service, Robyn Draeger

Bill and I want to thank Pastor John and our church friends of FirstUnitedMethodistChurchfor their prayers during my recent surgery. We know that prayer works, as was evident in my case, which took only half the time they thought for the surgery. Thank you for your support and love. Bill & Betty Amers

Dear Reverend John,

Thank you for the beautiful flower arrangement from the Wolven family in honor of their sister. A week later it is still pretty. I still have three to four more months of healing the Dr. tells me, but I am feeling some relief as a result of the surgery. Thank you and the Wolven family for your thoughtfulness. Sincerely, Bud DeHon

Dear members of FUMC, Thank you for your generous donation of $2,340.00 to the VincennesCommunity Food Pantry MissionFund.
The Vincennes Community Food Pantry

Sunday night, Judy Ritterskamp made a wonderful presentation about the development of her prayer life and the nature of prayer. Following her program, youth spent time proceeding through prayer stations set up to help them pray for the problems facing young people and children around the world while rejoicing in the many gifts God has given them.

A wonderful dish of homemade macaroni and a water balloon fight rounded out the evening.

Reminder: No youth or children’s events next Sunday, July Fourth.

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they went to another village.

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family.”

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Greetings,

While you are experiencing the summer with family and friends, please remember your church as it continues to do the work of the Lord each week.

Blessings and prayers,

John Groves
