Recent Memorial purchases:
Due to the generosity of the Wills & Bequest Committee as well as friends and families of the church, we have purchased new paraments for the church. Paraments are the materials used to cover the communion table and adorn the podium in the front of our church.
The colors are seasonal. The color purple is for the time just before Easter. The red is used around the time of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit comes to remind us of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The green is used for the times of the year that celebrate growth.
The white is used around special Sundays that celebrate Jesus Christ. The blue is the newest color that celebrates the Advent and Christmas season.
The money used for this purchase was from the Memorial Fund that persons gave in memory of loved ones and friends that have left this world for life eternal.
Those persons who are remembered include: Katie McMahan, Inez Shoudy, Bill Case, AmericaGreenlee and Eugene Warren.
We give thanks to God for these persons and the legacy they leave with us.
HAITIPROJECT TO HONOR ELI & VELMA HENDRIX, AND TIM ELLIS . . .
Carolyn and Doyle Ellis were asked by Raphael Dessieu, the head of the Methodist Church in Haiti, to start a medical/dental/eye program in Cayes as they had in Jeremie, Haiti. They have been working on a clinic the last three visits and hope to complete it this year.
The project is named the Eli-Tim Clinic in honor of the late Dr. Eli Hendrix and Mrs. Velma Hendrixwho made multiple trips to Cayes to do optometical work and in honor of the late Tim Ellis who collected thousands of pairs of glasses for their program. The clinic will serve the medical/dental/optometric needs of persons who can’t afford the public clinics.
Funds are of course needed to complete this project — $3000 is needed by the end of January for construction costs. And donations can be made to support the work team members. These Volunteers in Missionpay $1400 for this trip. At this time there are two openings on the team which will travel to HaitiFebruary 17-26, 2009. If you wish to contribute to this project, please send your donations ear-marked “Ellis Mission trip” to the District Office, 1601 Old Orchard Rd., Vincennes 47591.
For more information about the trip call Carolyn or Doyle Ellis at 812- 890-3910 or 812 -890-7455.
As you know Haitihas been devastated by 4 hurricanes in the past months which destroyed their fruit trees, field crops, loss of live stock and is now resulting in the death of many due to starvation. They are in desperate need of help. Medical help is one of their top priorities.
Thank you for your prayers and any financial help you can give.
Dear MISSIONCOMMITTEE Member — the next meeting of the Committee will be Sunday, January 11, 2009, after Sunday school at 11:45 in the All Occasion Room. At this time, we will look at all the projects we support, new ones we may wish to include, and decide how to best use the pledged Faith Promise money. Blessings — Lillian

“FirstUnitedMethodistChurchfamily,
Thank you so much for the Christmas card and gift cards. It is always nice hearing from you and getting a stress reliever at the end of the semester. Classes have gone great this semester. I have A’s in both classes. I really enjoy these classes and Butler. I’m looking forward to next semester. Thanks again.” Love, Katie Vaughn
“First United Methodist Church family and Pastor John,
I want to thank all of you who send cards, notes, or maybe just a word of encouragement during George’s illness and passing.
A special thank you to Pastor John for his wonderful service in celebration of George’s life. Also a special thanks to those who made the long trip to Greencastle to pay their respects. My family and I appreciate all that you did for us. I am blessed to be a part of this wonderful church.” Peggy York
HERE IS AN UPDATE!! FAITH MISSIONPROMISE. . .
Goal for money is $15,000 – we have promised $20,704 Goal for hours is 5,000 – we have promised 4,767 We continue to celebrate a wonderful mixture of financial support and offers to give time and talent to service ministry. It is not too late to contribute. If you would like to financially support missions or add to the projected hours of service ministry, let the church office know.
MISSIONARY SUPPORT. . . VincennesFirstUnitedMethodistChurchis looking at the possibility of a covenant relationship with a missionary that will be serving in Guatemalafor two years. A portion of the covenant is a $1,200 per year financial commitment that the Missions Committee is recommending to covenant with using some of the Faith MissionPromise money. This would mean a financial covenant of $2,400 for the two years. In addition to the financial commitment, there is a covenant from the congregation requested.
As a supporting congregation, we will covenant with Tom Heaton serving God in Guatemala at Project Salud Y Paz and supporting the training of pastors with Evangelical Primitive Methodist Church of Guatemala, to:
1. Pray for Tom Heaton, his family, and his work:
2. Tell the story of Tom Heaton’s work and ministry to the congregation and community by sharing letters and news items with the congregation and the community:
3. Maintain a relationship with Tom Heaton and his family by writing letters and telling him about our congregation’s ministry and mission:
4. Remembering Tom Heaton and his family at special times (birthday, Easter, Christmas, etc…) with cards, letters, and remembrances.
Next week, the church office will be changing from AT & T to Cinergy Metro Net. This will be a savings to the church and add high speed internet and digital telephone. This will change e-mail addresses for the staff. Once these addresses have been setup, you will receive them in the Mid-Week News and the Sunday worship bulletin.
