WE REJOICE WITH. . .

Grandmother Mary Jo Vermillion & Family upon the birth of Kenzie Paige Vermillion, born December 4, 2008. Kenzie weighed 6 lbs. and was 17” long at birth. She is the daughter of Jo Marie Vermillion. We praise God for His gift of children.

Recent Memorial purchases:

Due to the generosity of the Wills & Bequest Committee as well as friends and families of the church, we have purchased new paraments for the church. Paraments are the materials used to cover the communion table and adorn the podium in the front of our church.

The colors are seasonal. The color purple is for the time just before Easter. The red is used around the time of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit comes to remind us of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The green is used for the times of the year that celebrate growth.

The white is used around special Sundays that celebrate Jesus Christ. The blue is the newest color that celebrates the Advent and Christmas season.

The money used for this purchase was from the Memorial Fund that persons gave in memory of loved ones and friends that have left this world for life eternal.

Those persons who are remembered include: Katie McMahan, Inez Shoudy, Bill Case, AmericaGreenlee and Eugene Warren.

We give thanks to God for these persons and the legacy they leave with us.

HAITIPROJECT TO HONOR ELI & VELMA HENDRIX, AND TIM ELLIS . . .

Carolyn and Doyle Ellis were asked by Raphael Dessieu, the head of the Methodist Church in Haiti, to start a medical/dental/eye program in Cayes as they had in Jeremie, Haiti. They have been working on a clinic the last three visits and hope to complete it this year.

The project is named the Eli-Tim Clinic in honor of the late Dr. Eli Hendrix and Mrs. Velma Hendrixwho made multiple trips to Cayes to do optometical work and in honor of the late Tim Ellis who collected thousands of pairs of glasses for their program. The clinic will serve the medical/dental/optometric needs of persons who can’t afford the public clinics.

Funds are of course needed to complete this project — $3000 is needed by the end of January for construction costs. And donations can be made to support the work team members. These Volunteers in Missionpay $1400 for this trip. At this time there are two openings on the team which will travel to HaitiFebruary 17-26, 2009. If you wish to contribute to this project, please send your donations ear-marked “Ellis Mission trip” to the District Office, 1601 Old Orchard Rd., Vincennes 47591.

For more information about the trip call Carolyn or Doyle Ellis at 812- 890-3910 or 812 -890-7455.

As you know Haitihas been devastated by 4 hurricanes in the past months which destroyed their fruit trees, field crops, loss of live stock and is now resulting in the death of many due to starvation. They are in desperate need of help. Medical help is one of their top priorities.

Thank you for your prayers and any financial help you can give.

Dear MISSIONCOMMITTEE Member — the next meeting of the Committee will be Sunday, January 11, 2009, after Sunday school at 11:45 in the All Occasion Room. At this time, we will look at all the projects we support, new ones we may wish to include, and decide how to best use the pledged Faith Promise money. Blessings — Lillian

NOTES OF THANKS. . .

We received a note of thanks from BrightwoodCommunity Centerin Indianapolisthanking us for our continued support. We sent $300.00 which they thank us for, and say our donation is a blessed reminder of our connection to them. Rev. Debra Grady, Ex. Dir.

“FirstUnitedMethodistChurchfamily,

Thank you so much for the Christmas card and gift cards. It is always nice hearing from you and getting a stress reliever at the end of the semester. Classes have gone great this semester. I have A’s in both classes. I really enjoy these classes and Butler. I’m looking forward to next semester. Thanks again.” Love, Katie Vaughn

“First United Methodist Church family and Pastor John,

I want to thank all of you who send cards, notes, or maybe just a word of encouragement during George’s illness and passing.

A special thank you to Pastor John for his wonderful service in celebration of George’s life. Also a special thanks to those who made the long trip to Greencastle to pay their respects. My family and I appreciate all that you did for us. I am blessed to be a part of this wonderful church.” Peggy York

HERE IS AN UPDATE!! FAITH MISSIONPROMISE. . .

Goal for money is $15,000 – we have promised $20,704 Goal for hours is 5,000 – we have promised 4,767 We continue to celebrate a wonderful mixture of financial support and offers to give time and talent to service ministry. It is not too late to contribute. If you would like to financially support missions or add to the projected hours of service ministry, let the church office know.

MISSIONARY SUPPORT. . . VincennesFirstUnitedMethodistChurchis looking at the possibility of a covenant relationship with a missionary that will be serving in Guatemalafor two years. A portion of the covenant is a $1,200 per year financial commitment that the Missions Committee is recommending to covenant with using some of the Faith MissionPromise money. This would mean a financial covenant of $2,400 for the two years. In addition to the financial commitment, there is a covenant from the congregation requested.

As a supporting congregation, we will covenant with Tom Heaton serving God in Guatemala at Project Salud Y Paz and supporting the training of pastors with Evangelical Primitive Methodist Church of Guatemala, to:

1. Pray for Tom Heaton, his family, and his work:

2. Tell the story of Tom Heaton’s work and ministry to the congregation and community by sharing letters and news items with the congregation and the community:

3. Maintain a relationship with Tom Heaton and his family by writing letters and telling him about our congregation’s ministry and mission:

4. Remembering Tom Heaton and his family at special times (birthday, Easter, Christmas, etc…) with cards, letters, and remembrances.

Next week, the church office will be changing from AT & T to Cinergy Metro Net. This will be a savings to the church and add high speed internet and digital telephone. This will change e-mail addresses for the staff. Once these addresses have been setup, you will receive them in the Mid-Week News and the Sunday worship bulletin.

“Dear Friends, Words cannot express my appreciation for all of the thoughtful tasks that have been done for me. I certainly wasn’t prepared to fact this situation alone. But with Pastor John and Sue, many faithful friends, prayers, and many beautiful cards received, I feel very blessed.” Sincerely, Tommy Young

WE RECEIVED A NOTE OF THANKS FROM Mrs. Beth Ferrell: She thanks Rev. Groves, Velma & Lillian, the Adult Sunday School Classes, and the congregation of FUMC for lettering her share her personal missionary experiences, the video, and discussion of rural African life. Thanks for the excellent dinner and extra time visiting with various people and meeting our D. S. Judy Purvis and people from Community UMC and MonroeCity UMC. Special thanks for the very generous gift we gave her which will help defray expenses, plus will be shared with her friends in Sierra Leoneto help buy a sack of rice for each family.

Hello Everyone,

In case you missed it, what a wonderful Service and day of ministry we celebrated this past Sunday. We had Beth Ferrell, a United Methodist Missionary share with us about her experiences sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. We heard the cherub, children and youth choirs sing and witnessed a wonderful celebration anthem from the chancel choir with Dan Miller leading us in dance. To top it off, we celebrated with a Faith Mission Promise of second mile giving to Missions in dollar amount and hours of ministry time to be given this coming year.

If you did not have the opportunity to complete a card for your promise to God, we would like to have your responses to add to the totals from last Sunday. Please drop your promises by the church office. Please remember that this information will be confidential.

We would like to thank the Missions Committee for all of the work in the planning and generating such a wonderful day filled with hospitality. From the decorations on the table to the delicious meal that was prepared and served. Also, for the gracious time given from the kitchen angels who served and cleaned after the meal.

John Groves

Greeting,

As a courtesy, we wanted you to be aware of some information we recently received. The greenhouse that we ordered our Poinsettias from has closed its doors.

Therefore, we will no longer be able to accept any orders this year. We do want to thank you for ordering from us in the past and may God continue to bless you this season and always.

DearChurchFamily:

A while back you received an e-mail regarding the Church Council’s decision to acquire the services of Kemper CPA Group to do a review of our financial procedures and policies. Part of the work that Kemper had us do was submit financial records of the accounts, randomly check a sampling of contributors’ statements and provide a report of the findings.

Here is a synopsis of the report:

Review 2007 bank statements and reconciliations: Nothing came to our attention to lead us to believe that the bank reconciliations were not accurate during the period covered.

Select a random sample of members for 2007 giving and send negative confirmation to those members: Nothing came to our attention to lead us to believe that giving was improperly reported during the period covered. No negative confirmations were returned to us.

Select a random sample of check disbursements from each of the six accounts, and examine for two signatures on that check and an invoice approval by a non-signer of that check:

In our sample of checks, we found the following exception:

1. Only one signature on the check; invoice approved,

2. Dual signature on the check, however, invoice was not approved; invoice was approved by one of the two checks signers.

3. Invoice was approved by one of the two check signers.
